Named after Janet Burns, a gardener from New Mexico who introduced the varieity in 1939. She received the original seeds from a neighbor. Though Mrs. Burns' basil has a strong "lemon" flavor, it is actually not closely related to 'lemon basil' (Ocimum citriodorum) but is actually a cross between 'sweet basil' (Ocimum basilicum) and 'hoary basil' (Ocimum americanum).

Germination start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost or direct sow, 1/4 deep
Requirements full sun, moderate to high water needs, well drained soil

    Antagonists rue
Harvest harvest leaves at 60-90 days, 120-140 days for seed
Uses edible*(leaves, seeds), medicinal*, herb/spice, utility (repellent, insecticide)
Notes pinch top sets of leaves to prevent blooming, basil does not tolerate cold well (less than 50 F)
    Breed Status Open Pollinated
